Official Biography
NOTE: This biography is based on information aquired from the book All About Capcom which explains the official Street Fighter plot in detail. That's right, SFA3 screwed up the plot so much Capcom had to publish an entire book to clear things up. Of course, if they REALLY wanted to clear things up they should have axed the entire SFA3 plot like they had already done with SFA1, but I digress. Anyway, this book is only in Japanese, so don't make any plans to go out to your local Barnes & Noble and find it. But you can read the entire SF plot FAQ at the Fighter Mania page. I consider this source to be completely credible and if you disagree with it, tough. I'm not going to waste my time arguing the details with you.
Chun-Li is a special agent for the Internation Criminal Police Organization (aka Interpol). Her story begins in Street Fighter Alpha 2, where she is trying to find her father, who has gone missing on an assignment. She receives a lead from Gen, a friend of her father's and her former sensei, and begins tracking the movements of M. Bison and his criminal empire, Shadaloo. She finally tracks down M. Bison and demands that he tell her what happened to her father. Bison laughs, and the two of them fight. M. Bison defeats her and runs away, mocking her and bragging that he killed her father. Chun-Li, now more determined than ever to find and destroy M. Bison and Shadaloo, swears to avenge her father's death.
Chun-Li's next encounter with Shadaloo takes place in Street Fighter Alpha 3. Two years have passed since the events of SFA2, and Chun-Li is now heading up Interpol's investigation of Shadaloo. But due to massive management corruption, Chun-Li finds herself powerless as an official investigator. She aligns with Charlie, who is facing a similar corruption scandal in the U.S. Army, and together they form a vigilante task force dedicated to bringing down M. Bison. The Army has other plans though, and they send Charlie's best friend and superior officer, Guile, to stop Charlie, who I guess is leading the team. As seen in Guile's SFA3 story, Chun-Li tries to stop Guile, but he ignores her (though I guess they didn't actually fight).
Once Guile finds Charlie, though, he comes to realize the truth about Shadaloo, the corruption scandals, and Charlie's mission, and they join forces. The air strike Charlie and Chun-Li had ordered was called off due to the corrupt officials. As Charlie and Guile go to destroy the Psycho Drive, Chun-Li sets up explosives around Shadaloo's base, and briefly catches a glimpse of Cammy, but she runs off before Chun-Li can find out anything about her. In the end, Charlie died in the explosion thanks to Bison, but the base, and the Psycho Drive, were destroyed, and several of Shadaloo facilities around the world were shut down.
Three more years pass. Shadaloo has taken a serious hit, but it isn't dead yet. The next Street Fighter tournament has arrived, and the host is none other than M. Bison, who is somehow still alive. Chun-Li enters the tournament to find Bison and finish him, and Shadaloo, off for good. The full results of the SF2 tournament have never and probably will never be made completely official. About the only thing that has been officially stated by Capcom is that Akuma appeared out of nowhere and killed Bison. Hold that thought for a minute as we proceed to Chun-Li's story in Street Fighter III: Third Strike.
In SF3 TS, which I believe is supposed to take place shortly after the actual SF3 tournament, Chun-Li is investigating the abduction of a kidnapped girl by a new organization led by Gill. However, the abduction apparently was masterminded by Urien, Gill's little brother. Although we never really know WHY Urien kidnapped the girl thanks to Capcom's unwillingness to give the SF3 series much in the way of plot details, Chun-Li doesn't seem to care much about Urien's motives, she just wants her back.
When Chun-Li confronts Urien, she demands the release of the girl. Urien replies that he will release the girl, but first he wants to fight her, because her "legendary legs are said to have destroyed 'that organization.'" He then adds, "Let me see for myself, if the rumors about you are true..."
This leaves very little room for doubt about who won the actual Street Fighter 2 tournament, wouldn't you say? As TiamatRoar pointed out in the FAQ though, nothing is official with Capcom unless they out and out SAY "Chun-Li won the tournament." Even then, they're liable to change the story completely on a whim, until it turns out that, as a friend of mine once said, that Chun-Li didn't actually defeat Bison but instead a windowwasher dressed in Bison's uniform. ^_^ However, it makes her the top candidate for SF2 championship by leaps and bounds.
Well, back to the official plot. Needless to say, Chun-Li defeats Urien and rescues the girl, and as she held the girl in her arms, she realized what her next "fight" would be. For her father, for her country, and for all the warm-hearted people she has met throughout the world, Chun-Li decides to begin teaching children the true meaning of strength and beauty through the martial arts.
Official Miscellaneous Info
Chun-Li does NOT have an official last name. The only time she was given a last name was in the American live action movie and in the line of SF movie action figures Hasbro made (Chun-Li's, by the way, never came out, which really pisses me off cuz it looked great.) If Chun-Li DID have a real last name, don't you think it would have appeared in the actual games at least ONCE? I mean, for crying out loud, she'd been in all but two SF games ever since her debut.
Chun-Li has been training since she was five years old. She first got interested in the martial arts when she became a fan of Bruce Lee. In fact, she's a huge Bruce Lee fan and had (has?) posters of him in her room.
In addition to being the strongest woman in the world and the most likely victor of the SF2 tournament, Chun-Li's also quite the sharpshooter. In an international sharpshooting contest, she placed 6th. Who was first? I dunno, Sniper Wolf? ^_^
In the SFV anime series, Chun-Li's father's name is Dorai. However, the SFV series is no more canon than the SF American movie. So, officially, her father remains nameless.
Gen has been officially stated as being a friend of Chun-Li's father taught her a couple of moves, but he was not her main teacher.
Chun-Li is a musician! ...Or at least, she was as a young girl. There's an official artwork showing Chun-Li growing up and it features her playing a traditional Chinese instrument called the ehru. Many thanks to the people who helped me when I wanted to know what the instrument was called (I'd thanks them by name but I accidently deleted the e-mails while I was cleaning out my mailbox... sorry! ^_^)
Chun-Li's style was originally listed as Wushu style Kung Fu, but recently Capcom decided to call it Tai Chi instead. Not that it matters much, because the only SF characters whose moves are actually accurate to their style are the boxing and wrestling characters.
